Measured Squarely

Our friendship has a gate
that lets the lover in
Constructed on the lawn
as the summer begins
Untreated planks of wood
placed top to toe
measured squarely
bearing our load
crossmembers nailed
down tightly
nothing could come between
the flanks of devotion
partitioning this seam

Then when winter came
the gate was sturdy
whiplashed
against the elements
those tightly placed planks
once expanded now contract
The crossmembers held
wood against wood
nail against grain
gaps stretched from top to toe
which weren't measured squarely
but still bore our load
